The Dick's Dog Story
While working in the medical technology segment in the early 1990s in Orlando, FL, Dave Carey and Jack Graham discovered a mutual passion that transcended their day jobs: music. Both were talented multi-instrumentalists, sharing a deep appreciation for guitar-driven classics by the likes of Bob Dylan and The Beatles. This shared love quickly blossomed into a strong friendship, with Dave joining Jack at his renowned Monday music nights in Winter Park. These evenings were not just performances but creative crucibles, where the duo challenged each other to craft new songs weekly alongside beloved covers. This fusion of creativity and camaraderie laid the groundwork for their band, Dick's Dog.
The duo's musical journey took a significant leap when Dave moved into a house with a backyard adjoining Jack's, separated only by an aged wooden fence. This proximity was fortuitous; Dave's spacious new home was perfect for a studio, and Jack had the recording equipment and drums. Together, they transformed Dave's spare room and garage into a hive of musical creativity. This period of intense collaboration resulted in their debut album, "The Fence," a mix of original compositions and covers, capturing the raw energy and eclectic influences of their jam sessions.
As life's tides turned, bringing changes and relocations, it became harder to churn out recordings as they had. Their second album, "The Geography Lesson," emerged from the tail end of "The Fence" sessions, showcasing a more mature and reflective sound. They also released "Tubbin' at Mitch's," a compilation with a more mainstream appeal but still bearing the band's experimental signature. Their music, a blend of folk, rock, punk, and experimental, with covers from artists like Townes Van Zandt, reflected their musical influences and their personal journeys – Jack's family life and Dave's romantic struggles.
Years later, in 2024, technology allowed Dave to revisit and reimagine their earlier work. They remixed and remastered the original recordings for "The Fence: The 25th Anniversary Edition." This project was more than just a revival of old tunes; it was a testament to their enduring friendship and musical bond. Dave and Jack, despite life's changes, remained connected through their music. Dick's Dog was not just a band; it was a chronicle of life, friendship, and the unifying power of music.
